Legal translators are highly qualified specialists with a competent command of the specialist legal terminology involved in both the source and target language and an in-depth knowledge of the underlying legal systems. Possession and ownership are often used synonymously in everyday speech and for stylistic reasons this may be acceptable, for example in a marketing translation. However this would be a fatal mistake in a legal translation. Depending on the nature of the purchase contract, for example, not every house ‘buyer’ in England would be classed as a buyer based on the German definition but rather a leaseholder, depending on circumstances (freehold vs. leasehold). Small yet critical differences such as these show just how important it is to get a legal translation right!
